“In this immersive two-day workshop, renowned artist David Sandell, will help you to understand why portraiture is so compelling!”

This masterclass will equip you with the skills and insight required to achieve a convincing portrait in coloured pencil. Guided by renowned and respected artist; David Sandell, (who recently became an ambassador for Derwent) you will be using Derwent “Lightfast” oil based coloured pencils for their rich, blend-able qualities to create your portraits for this weekend long workshop.

Day 1 – In the morning, an introduction to portraits, covering the underlying bone structure and fascial muscles will be given by David. Students will then begin exploring the landscape of the face looking at individual features in detail (eyes, nose, ears, mouth, and hair). For the second half of the day, students will be establishing the basic drawing for their chosen portrait, guided by David.

Day 2 - Using the techniques demonstrated by David throughout the day, you’ll learn to portray the features and textures of the face accurately. David will speak on the intricacies of using of colour and value to bring your art piece to a successful conclusion. He will then speak to students as a group and one on one, to address specific areas of your image that may need adjusting/ correcting within your drawing, and he will reinstate the principles to be followed to maintain a likeness of your subject.

The techniques and principles covered over the two days of this course will give you the skills and confidence you need to progress to new heights in your portrait focused artistic endeavours and more.
