Expressive Charcoal portrait studies from life With Sarah Betts (Cambridge)
Join this workshop if you’d like to learn how to use graphite powder and charcoal in an expressive style, to capture the human form and portrait. You’ll be guided by Sarah, through the entire drawing process, and learn to use fearless gestural mark making capturing tone, lighting, and texture swiftly, you’ll be bringing out individual features and portraying mood. In the morning, working with other students, you will warm up with "speed portraiture", drawing each other in rotation. For the afternoon you’ll move on to working from life and casts at a slower pace towards a final piece. You’ll leave equipped with the mark making techniques and knowledge of the fundamental principles to consider, so as to continue your studies, and you’ll also have understanding of setting up your scene and it’s lighting.
