Daniel Smith Luminescent Watercolours are professional-quality 15ml artist paints designed to create shimmering, iridescent and colour-shifting effects. Choose from a wide range of specialist colours for adding luminous detail, highlights and distinctive optical effects to watercolour artwork.
Daniel Smith Luminescent Watercolours are specialist artist paints created to introduce shimmer, iridescence and changing colour effects that are difficult to achieve with conventional watercolours. They can be used on their own, layered over other colours or mixed with traditional watercolour paints to introduce additional luminosity.
The range is particularly effective for capturing reflective and light-changing surfaces, including feathers, fish scales, flowers, metals, water, skies and other natural subjects. It can also be used to add striking details and highlights to illustrative and fantasy artwork.
The Luminescent collection includes several different optical effects:
Iridescent Watercolours – reflect light to produce a noticeable shimmering or metallic appearance.
Interference Watercolours – refract and scatter light, creating effects that can change depending on the background and viewing angle.
Duochrome Watercolours – shift between two colours as the light or viewing angle changes.
Pearlescent Watercolours – create an opalescent, pearl-like finish and can also be mixed or glazed with other colours.
Many of the paints produce their strongest effects when glazed over darker colours or used on dark paper, although individual shades can also create more subtle results on traditional white watercolour paper.
Daniel Smith carefully assesses its watercolours for characteristics including lightfastness, colour strength, clarity, vibrancy, undertone and consistency. The Luminescent collection offers a broad choice of specialist colours in 15ml tubes, allowing artists to introduce unusual reflective and colour-shifting effects alongside their existing watercolour palette.
There are now over 260 colours in the Daniel Smith 15ml tube watercolour range so we have had to make 3 listings - you can find the standard pigment colours by clicking HERE
